Greece

Polis

A Greek city-state that's independent and made up of a city and it's surroundings.

Democracy

A government where all citizens share in running it (voting).

Tyrant

A person who takes power by force and rules with total authority.

Colony

A settlement in a new territory that keeps close ties with its homeland.

Agora

An open area that served both as a market and a meeting place.

A fortress in a city-state, usually on a hill.

Oligarchy

A government in which a small group of people hold power (usually rich).

Monarchy

Supreme power or sovereignty held by a single person.
