  • In representative democracy citizens elect a leader that makes decisions on the behalf of the people.

Ancient Greece wasn't a single country run by one government. It was run by things called city-states. City-states are areas that have their own government.

Also, people from Ancient Greece didn't call themselves Greeks. They referred to themselves as Corinthians if they were from Corinth, etc etc

ATHENS AND SPARTA

THEY WERE BIG RIVALS

  • Spartan life was simple. Their focus was on obedience and war.
  • Athenian life was great. You could get a great education, pursue a great career, and have a choice to go to war.

Now the Spartans just wanted to protect Greece, but Athens wanted more land. this led to a war with all the Greeks.

However, the two areas had a similar government. They both had an Assembly, whose members were elected by the citizens.

GREECE WAS A VERY BIG COUNTRY

  • It has over 1400 islands
  • It's almost completely surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea.
  • Around 80% of Greek mainland is mountainous, and the mountains formed barriers around the cities.
  • Under the rule of Alexander the Great, Greece stretched all the way to Egypt and India.

ISLANDS

  • Since there are 1,400 islands in Greece, many people lived on them.
  • Some islands include Crete, Rhodes, Chios, and Delos.
