History

  • "Barrow St" was "Reason St" originally and then changed to "Raisin St"
  • "Little Africa" in mid-19th century.
  • Low rent led to artists living there
  • Crime rates were bad, but police crack-down was commissioned and the village was cleaned up by 1920s.
  • Hit it's most active time in 40s and 50s.

Folk Revival

-Started in the 40s and peaked in the 60s

Rags to Riches

  • Village started out as an easy place to live because it was cheap, so it attracted musicians and artists.
  • The success of these artists has made this village into the creative community it has become today, and is one of the most sought after places to live in the country.
