GUILDS

  • An apprentice learned under a master for 2-7 years and than became a journeyman.
  • A journeyman was a daily worker for a master that had already been an apprentice. They worked 6 days a week and became a master once they created a masterpiece.
  • A master owns their own business and would sometime participate in civic government.

There is a merchant guild and a craft guild. A merchant guild is made up of merchants and workers protecting their rights to trade. A craft guild is made up of skilled workers that set standards for working conditions

Being in a guild provided you with training to become very skilled at something, health insurance, full funeral expenses, and guaranteed that there would be quality workers.

If you were not in a guild your chances of having a good job was very low.

If you were in a guild you were higher up in the social class. Your family also benefits because of the health insurance provided by a guild and they won't need to pay for your funeral.

MODERN EXAMPLES OF A GUILD

  • Being an intern is similar to being an apprentice
  • Being a worker is similar to journeyman
  • Being a manager is like being a master
