  • Very vocal lobbying group
  • Pittsburg passed a gun ordinance
  • NRA sued and the case went to the House
  • Majority voted in favor of NRA
  • NRA typically influences policy through lobbying and rallies

POLITICAL INFLUENCE

  • Support two main political goals:
  • Reducing gun laws
  • Increasing gun safety awareness
  • Gives money to candidates that support these goals
  • Gave $2,500 to David Kanuth, a strong advocate for the right to bear arms

NRA'S EFFECTIVENESS

JOHN MCCAIN

  • Received over $500,000 from NRA and like organizations from 1989-2012
  • Voting history includes support of loosening license and background checks
  • Also supported that weapons in checked bags should be allowed on Amtrak trains

RON PAUL

  • Received almost $100,000 from NRA since 1989
  • Released a response on Christmas Day condemning further gun legislation
  • Claimed protection of civil freedom and minimal government intervention
