  • Over 170,000 Americans have died from gun violence between 2012 and 2016
  • 62 percent of these deaths were suicides, not homicides and unintentional gun death is only less than two percent

GUN CONTROL IN WASHINGTON, D.C.

  • In 1976, Washington, D.C. put a handgun ban in place
  • In 1976, the homicide count was 188 homicides
  • In 1988, the homicide count was 364

GUN CONTROL IN THE UNITED KINGDOM

  • The United Kingdom banned handguns in 1997
  • Despite the ban, they had reported a higher burglary rate per 100,000 people than that of the United States in 2010

GUN PREVALENCE

  • According to another study, in America the amount of guns owned between 1999 and 2003 increased by nearly 56 percent
  • Yet, the crime rate had gone down by almost 50 percent between those years

What Can We Do?

SOLUTION

  • Increasing the quality and frequency of background checks is a good solution to gun violence
  • Background checks have stopped 3 million gun sales to prohibited persons

  • Crime has increased in places with strict gun laws
