PRESENTATION OUTLINE

GUSTATORY RECEPTOR CELLS.

FUNCTIONS OF THE CELL

  • Gustatory cells are short-lived and are continuously regenerating.
  • They each contain a taste pore at the surface of the tongue which is the site of sensory transduction.

SHAPE OF CELL

  • The cells are spindle shaped.
  • It extends from the base to help with tastebuds.
  • Microvilli from each taste cell project into the taste pore which communicate with the dissolved solutes on the surface of the tongue.

WHAT ORGAN ITS FOUND IN

  • They are found on the tongue in the microvilli.

INTERESTING FACTS

  • Each bud contains over 100 cells and all buds react to the basic tastes, forming a signal that is transmitted to the brain.
  • An adult has on average 9,000 taste buds (a child even 10,000)
  • Taste is triggered only by chemicals that dissolve in the water.
