JAPANESE FISH PRINTING

HISTORY OF GYOTAKU

  • May have been used by fishermen to record their catches
  • Dates back to the mid-1800s
  • Inks or pigments directly applied to relief surfaces in earliest nature prints
  • Both sides of a leaf typically coated w/ ink & put between paper
  • Mirror images produced when rubbed by hand

GYOTAKU CURRENT DAY USE

  • Alternative to taxidermy and mounting fish
  • Has become a recognized form of fine art
  • Continuing to go through evolutionary changes
  • Greatly gaining in popularity and areas of exposure
