HABITAT LOSS

WHY IS IT HAPPENING

  • Expansion of agricultural land
  • Intensive timber harvesting
  • Coastal marine areas are being disrupted by urbanization and industrialization
  • Other causes are water developements such as dams

It's estimated that 70% of deforested areas were converted to agricultural land.

US national forests are intersected by over 430,000 miles of road that causes soil erosion and mudslides.

The amount of US land lost to development has more than doubled between 1960 and 1990.

HOW PANDAS ARE EFFECTED BY HABITAT LOSS

A panda's primary food source, bamboo, only grows at altitudes of 500 to 3100meters.

Most of a panda's habitat has been cleared for logging, agriculture, and hydropower development.

Unfortunately, in the Sichuan Province, the habitat shrunk by 50 percent between 1974 and 1989.

The Yangtze Basin region is the panda's primary habitat.

Their home is being fragmented by roads.

This isolates the pandas and prevents them from mating.

HOW WE CAN HELP

  • Increase the area of habitat under legal protection
  • Increase patrolling of illegal logging
  • Provide incentives for companies that reduce deforestation
  • Isolate them from people
  • Educate the public about the effects we have on the forests of animals

How Habitat loss Effects Red Pandas

The home ranges of female Red Pandas often measure about one square mile, while males can live in areas twice that size.

Scientists believe that Red Panda-like animals have historically been found in many areas of the planet.

Red Pandas have a slow rate of reproduction and have a great deal of difficulty recovering from population declines.

Red Pandas are extinct in many countries due to several factors

  • Agricultural land
  • Hunting
  • Attractions

Most of the Red Panda habitat is cleared for tea and fodder plants in Nepal.

Red Pandas are hunted for their fur. They use their fur for hats and coats.

They are being sold to zoos around the world as an attraction. The people of Nepal say that 47 Red Pandas a year are sold to zoos.

How we can help

  • Limit the number of Red Pandas sold to zoos.
  • Put a stop to poaching of the Red Panda
  • Establish a protected area for the Red Panda to live.
  • Educate the people about how we effect the Red Panda habitat.
