  • Born 1922-Died 1973
  • Immigrated from the United States from Tel Aviv, Isreal
  • Doctorate from Columbia University in 1952
  • Specialized in group psychotherapy, especially with children
  • Worked as a professor, also helped government of Israel in guidance and counseling
  • Later on he wrote authoritative books

  • Designed to eliminate barriers that can prevent learning
  • Confrontation should be avoided
  • Validation, feeling accepted
  • Students must feel welcome

HOW TO USE IN THE CLASSROOM

  • Harmonious communication-clear, brief expectations that focus on behavior not student
  • Invites cooperation-teacher must encourage and demonstrate own behavior and communication
  • Promote discipline, not punishment-use guidance to help students learn from, not criticism or punishment

POSITIVES V. NEGATIVES

  • Shows respect, caring, non-judging, positive environment to build students up
  • Help teach communication skills
  • Minimizes distractions because the teacher is focusing on important battles not all punishments

Conclusion

Learning is directly influenced by communication and if a teacher can create a welcoming environment and promote communication and focus on guidance and discipline, not punishment, learning barriers can be prevented.
