Why do we have hair?

  • Eyebrows: to protect our eyes from sweat
  • Eyelashes: to protect our eyes from dust and dirt
  • Head Hair: to cushion our head from falls, and to keep it warm in the Winter

What is hair made of?

  • Follicles
  • Protein
  • Chains Of Aminoacids

Facts about Follicles

  • There are 5 million follicles on your whole body
  • There are 1 million follicles on your head
  • We never ever generate new follicles
  • The base of follicles is called the papilla and it carries blood vessells

What are Follicles

A hair follicle is a skin organ that produces hair. Hair production occurs in phases, including growth (anagen), cessation (catagen), and rest (telogen) phases. Stem cells are responsible for hair production. It is a small tube in your skin.

Where are follicles

And how do they grow
They are small tubes in your skin, so in your skin! (some of the time) When a follicle rises out of your skin then another follicle grows in your skin. It starts as root cells, and then they join to make Keratin the protein hair is made out of.

The Hair Shaft

The Hair Shaft is made of a protein called Keratin with 3 layers. The protein is dead so the hair you see is dead.

The layers or the hair shaft

  • Medulla
  • Cortex
  • Cuticle
The Medulla is the inner layer of the hair shaft. It gives the hair color.

The Cortex is the second most outer part of the hair shaft. It also makes up most of the hair shaft. The Cortex like the Medulla give the hair color.

The Cuticle is made of shingle like overlapping scales. It is the hair you see most often.

Hairs Growth

In a year hair grows 15 centimeters or 6 inches.

In a month it grows 1.25 centimeters or half an inch.

Glossary

Keratin: the protein hair is made of

Follicles: a small tube in skin that hair is made out of

Hair Shaft: something hair is made out of that has Keratin in it

Medulla: part of the hair shaft

Cortex: part of the hair shaft

Cuticle: part of the hair shaft

Aminoacids: the alpha-amino acids, are the building blocks from which proteins are constructed
