HAITIAN SLAVES

SLAVERY

  • A slave is a person held against their will and is forced to do hard laborious tasks
  • Slavery is the state of being a slave and part takes in irksome and fatiguing work

HAITI SLAVERY HISTORY

  • In 1700s slave trade became popular among French and were taken to Haiti and neighboring countries
  • 500,000+ slaves were put to work on plantations
  • Slave code(written by Louis XIV) stated that a slave must obey their owner or be faced with cruel punishments
  • In 1789 the French Revolution started, causing many French slave owners to return to France
  • The Haiti slaves saw this as an opportunity to gain freedom and fought in the Haitian Revolution 1791-1804

SLAVERY NUMBERS

  • Estimated 220,000-200,000 people living in slavery
  • More than 300,000 children are slaves

ACTUAL SLAVES

  • Haitian slaves are usually poor and or orphaned children
  • More than 300,000 Haitian children are effected by domestic slavery
  • Restaveks (from French rester avec meaning "stay with") are the names of these enslaved children

RESTAVEKS

  • Poor children sent to wealthier homes by their families
  • Due to lack of money and food
  • Families send their children in hope of an education
  • Females are prone to being abused and or raped by their host family
  • Restaveks do the chores of the host family: cleaning, laundry, cooking, etc.

RESTAVEK STORY

  • Amberline with her three-month-old brother, Loubes. Their mother Adeline 32,
  • Her mother cannot afford to feed her three kids and pay for Amberline's school education
  • Adeline states that in few months she is going to give Amberline away to another family as a restavek

RESTAVEK STORY

  • Enso, 10, was found by his host family on the street when he was a year old
  • He began working for them when he was two and now does all the chores of the house
  • Enso receives abuses from the host family if he doesn't properly do his chores

GOVERNMENT STANCE

  • There is a DRAFT law on human trafficking
  • That makes it a crime to traffic a child
  • But the law isn't in forced and many traffickers get away with slavery
