HAITIAN VODOU

ORIGIN

  • It originated in the Caribbean in the 18th century
  • It is a mix between many different religions but mostly West African Vodun and Roman Catholicism
  • Was practiced by oppressed slaves

BELIEFS

  • They say that Haitian Vodou is more than a religion, but an experience that ties together mind and body
  • Beliefs may change depending on where it is practiced
  • Bondieu is the creator but we do not have a relationship with him

TRADITIONS

  • Each service is started with a series of songs and prayers n French and some African languages
  • The ways they end the service is the same but with a different group of songs

WORSHIP PLACES

  • They practice it in a temple called a Hounfour
  • It has two altars
  • They make sacrifices in this temple
  • Spirits can posses the living in this sacred space

PRIESTS

  • Houngans are male priests
  • Mambos are female priests
  • They are considered possessed and are supposed to help people through spells
  • However they sometimes can hurt or kill people through their powers

AFTERLIFE

  • When they die they pass into a world that is combined with the visible world and thy can watch over the living
