• Named the dynasty Han after a river
• He established a centralized government

HAN WUDI

• He is called the "Martial Emperor"
• By the end of his rule, it expanded to present day China
• Made citizens pay taxes, used the funds to build roads and irrigation systems
• Set up Five Erudites of the Five Classics of education

LAND & REFORM

• Many small land owners in China got into debt and forced into selling land
• Land, administrative, foreign policies, economic and currency reforms
• Wang Mang ordered the nationalization of land
• Slavery was abolished and then Wang was forced to revoke it
• Had no success with foreign affairs, accounted for his economic policies
