To make matters worse workers injured on the job
Usually had to go without pay until they were back on their feet

African Americans that lived on farms moved to cities to work in factories
They generally had poorer job choices, and many unions denied them access
Most African Americans were used a strike breakers and other industry laborers
Many Europeans immigrated for jobs in the industry
Czechs and Polish people settle in rural areas as farmers
