HOW IT GOT STARTED

• The Harlem Renaissance was the name for a cultural and artistic explosion
• Most people where migrating from the south so they could express their talents freely
• At the time of the renaissance it was called the New Negro Movement

WHATS GOING ON?

• A famous magazine called the Crisis published poems, stories, and visual works by artists of that period
• A number if factors contributed to the decline of the Harlem Renaissance like the Great Depression

• Black History month was first celebrated in 1928
• Many people considered Harlem as the Mecca for African Americans

• The word Renaissance means rebirth so the Harlem Renaissance was a rebirth for African Americans.
• The development of the NAACP was because of the Harlem Renaissance
