The Harpsichord is similar to a piano. A string is plucked when you press a key. On most Harpsichords two strings are plucked with one key.

The Harpsichord was first created in 1300. That version had the player pluck the string by hand to play the instrument. In the 1500's the instrument evolved to where you pressed a key which then caused a string to be plucked. By 1640, a Harpsichord similar to the ones used today was created where you pressed a key and two strings were plucked.
