You were looking for:  PARTS OF THE MOVIE...

  • that were more exciting than the book
  • that were disappointing after reading the book
  • that were different compared to the book

TODAY'S TASK:

Reflect on what happened in the MOVIE and in our READING of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

REFLECT ON THE BOOK AND THE MOVIE.  WAS/WERE THERE...

  • a change in the story-telling
  • differences in how you imagined the story to look or
  • differences in the pace of the adventure

HOW TO COMPLETE THE TASK

  • USE THE CLAIM, SUPPORT, QUESTION thinking routine

1. Make a claim about the topic

Claim: A sentence that briefly describes a difference between a part of the story as told by the book and the movie.

2. Identify support for your claim

Support: Things you saw, felt, and/or
know about the book or the movie that support your claim.

3. Ask a question related to your claim

Question: What are you still wondering about your claim?
What new questions does your
claim raise?

Example: Differences in story-telling between the movie and book

CLAIM
The movie had some parts of the story that were told differently. Some of these (but not all) were absolutely fantastic.
SUPPORT
During the Boa Constrictor chapter of the book, the glass disappears and the snake escapes to frighten Dudley and many of the zoo's visitors. In the movie, the glass disappears and Dudley falls into the enclosure, only to become trapped when the glass reappears. This doesn’t happen in the book! I enjoyed this scene as it gave Dudley a taste of what he deserved!
QUESTION
I wonder what J.K Rowling thinks about this change to her story? I wonder if they director asked for her permission to change it?

Example: The Movie’s Pace of Adventure ROCKETED!

CLAIM
The movie's pace was a lot faster than the book's.
SUPPORT
The introduction to the story in the book takes place in Privet Drive and explores the strange events that are happening around London before Harry is left with the Dursley family. During the movie the story starts with Albus Dumbledore and Professor McGonagall leaving Harry with the Dursley family. Then the story immediately jumps forward to Dudley’s birthday.
I was expecting more of a focus on Mr. Dursley at the beginning of the movie because the book started with a description of Mr. Dursley's encounters as he travelled through London "with his mind focussed on drills”.
QUESTION
Why would the directors of the movie miss these bits of the book? Aren’t they important for creating our mental models of the characters?
