HISTORY

  • Founded in the mid 18th century by Jewish mystics
  • Became popular with the less education common people
  • The idea was spread amougest the Jews during the Holocaust
  • After World War 2 the religion was spread through immigration.
  • The language mainly spoken is Yiddish

Why?
The Hasidic Jews wanted to live a sheltered life.
The close communities were centered around a leader called rebbe.
The first American groups were formed in the late 1940s and 50s

LOCATION

  • Many currently live in New York.
  • Most of them in Brooklyn, Williamsburg, Crown Hieghts, and Boro Park
  • 45 thousnad live in Crown Hieghts
  • 50 thousand live in Williamsburg
  • At least 15 thousand live in Crown Hieghts

WHY THEY ARE UNIQUE?

  • The hasidic Jews belong to a special movement within Orthodox Judiaism
  • They believe the Torah, the 5 books of Moscs, is the literal word of god.
  • The core of Hasidism is enthusiasm and mysticism
  • Mysticism is and interest in inner transformative experience, connection with god
  • Hasidim has a long history of traditional songs, story telling, and art aids to sevice god.
