SHARK ATTACKS IN HAWAII

  • In past years, the highest amount of shark attacks was a mere three
  • In 2013, however, 14 attacks occurred, scaring locals
  • An 8 foot long tiger shark is probably the culprit of many of the attacks
  • But this made people wonder...
  • Why so many more attacks? And why is such a dangerous shark so close to the shore?

WHERE? WHY?

  • One of the recent shark attacks where two men died occurred near Makena State Park
  • Despite this killing, there are no warning signs on the beach
  • Is this one of the reason of the increase in attacks? No "beware the sharks" signs?

WHERE? WHY?

  • Another popular location for shark sighting and attacks is Makena's Big Beach in Maui
  • A rocky cove residing in these waters is a popular place for snorkeling... And sharks
  • But sharks have been a part of Hawaii for years. Why are the attacks rising now?

SOME POSSIBLE REASONS

  • There are logical reasons on why people think the sharks are so violent
  • One may be that the sharks have their babies in winter months, closer to shore
  • Another is that tourists are relatively clueless on this sort of information
  • This lack of knowledge on shark whereabouts lead them into predator infested water
  • People also need to avoid cloudier waters, where sharks tend to hide
