In 1906 Lorin Thurston tried to make the area a park. It wasn't effective till Dr. Thomas A. Jagger joined him in 1912. He was there to be director of The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

They both worked hard to make the volcanoes a national park. The 13th president(Woodrow Wilson) signed to make it the 13th national park on August 1,1916.

In 1980, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural organization (UNESCO) named Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park an International Biosphere Reserve because of its outstanding scenic and scientific values.

Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987.
