REGRESSION

  • A return to an early stage of life or a supposed previous life through hypnosis or mental illness
  • We use regression to remember memories with certain people

  • A child who is abused by a parent later has no recollection of the events but has trouble forming relationship
  • A woman who found child birth particularly painful continues to have children
  • An optimist remember the past with a rosy glow and constantly repeats his mistakes

RATIONALIZATION

  • Rationalization is an attempt to logically justify unaccepted behavior
  • We use rationalization to avoid the true reason for the action

  • A person who is turned down for a date might rationalize and say well they weren’t attracted to me anyways
  • A person who is turned down for a date might rationalize and say well they weren’t attracted to me anyways

DISPLACEMENT

  • The removal of someone or something by someone or something else that takes their place, and the enforced departure of people from their homes
  • We express our anger towards a person or object that poses no threat for no reason

DISPLACEMENT...

  • We express our anger that lead to negative consequences like fighting with our boss. But instead we take our anger out on our spouses, children and pets
