Allergies

Allergies are a harmful immune system response by the body to a substance.

Primary Groups Affected

  • Young Children are the primary group affected. Allergies can be life long, or a child may grow out of their allergy when they become adults.

Most Common Allergies

  • Milk
  • Eggs
  • Fish
  • Shellfish
  • Treenuts/peanuts
  • Wheat
  • Soy Beans

Signs and Symptoms

  • Hives
  • Flushed skin or rash
  • Tingling or itchy sensation in mouth
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Coughing/wheezing
  • Dizziness/light headiness
  • Swelling of Throat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Loss of conciousness

Teachers

  • Teachers should be knowledgeable when it comes to allergies. They need to know how to protect and provide medical help when a child is having an allergic reaction. This is very important because a child could have a life threatening allergic reaction.

Common Illnesses

  • A common illness is an unhealthy condition in the body. Common illnesses include, runny nose, colds, and nose bleeds.

  • Infectious diseases are disorders caused by organisms.
  • An infectious disease can pass from person to person.

Primary Groups Affected

  • Children between the ages of birth-five are affected most by infectious diseases.
  • This is due to not keeping up proper hygiene, putting things in their mouths, and sharing toys with other children.

  • Teachers need to be able to identify infectious diseases so they are able to stop the disease from transmitting in the classroom.

Sexually Transmitted Disease

Sexually Transmitted Diseases are diseases than are transmitted by direct sexual contact.

  • Sexually active teenagers ages 15-19 years.
  • Young adults ages 20-24 years that are sexually active.

  • Thick, cloudy, bloody discharge from vagina or penis.
  • Pain or burning sensation.
  • Anal itching
  • Heavy, painful periods
  • Painful swollen testicles
  • Painful bowel movements

Teachers

  • It is helpful for teachers to be aware of STI's and their symptoms so they can inform their students on how to practice safe sex.

Groups Primarily Affected

  • Some skin-related issues are common between the ages of 2-6 years. Such as impetigo.
  • Skin-related issues are also common during puberty. Ages 13-17 years.The main type being acne.

  • Raised bumps that are red or white
  • A rash that could be painful or itchy
  • Scaly or rough skin
  • Peeling skin
  • Open sores of lesions
  • dry, cracked skin
  • Discolored patches of skin

Teachers

  • Teachers should be aware of the common symptoms of skin-related issues. It is important because a skin-related issues could be caused by an allergy. By knowing this the teachers can provide better medical care for their students.
