DEFINITION/DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION

  • Depression: a serious medical illness that involves the brain. The feelings you encounter do not go away
  • Mood disorder: Affects emotional state constantly
  • caused by either genetics, enviornental, psycological factors
  • causes mood swings & change of mind

Symptoms

  • Physical- eating unhealthy
  • Emotional- crying spells
  • Mental- regretful decisions
  • Behavioral- acting out (abuse)

Treatments

  • therapy & antidepressants
  • new meds: Tricyclics (not used often) and MAOI's (helps anxiety)

Additional Interesting Info

A young girl with depression said "If I can do it, so can you. I believe in you. I believe in recovery."

Depression is curable but the person has to help them self
