STREP

BY Richard Vien

What is the cause
The cause of strep throat is bacteria known as Streptococcus pyogenes, also known as group A streptococcus. Streptococcal bacteria are highly contagious. They can spread through airborne droplets when someone with the infection coughs or sneezes, or through shared food or drinks.

Wha is the treatment
Treatment is important to reduce complications. Oral antibiotics like penicillin, amoxicillin, cephalexin, or azithromycin are commonly used. Other medicines such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help with pain and fever.

What are the symptoms
Common symptoms include sore throat, fever, and swollen lymph nodes in the neck. Rarely, complications can involve the heart or kidneys

How is it spread
The strep bacterium is spread through direct contact with mucus from the nose or throat of infected persons or through the air by sneezing or coughing. Rarely, people catch strep throat eating contaminated food or milk

How can it be prevented
Avoid people with sore throats, and especially those with documented strep throat, until they have taken antibiotics for more than 48 hours. Wash your hands frequently after using items which may harbor the GAS bacteria (for example, dishes and utensils) Don't share food or drinks with a sick individual

Outbreak or epidemic of strep
A streptococci (GAS), which caused acute tonsillo-pharyngitis in 200–250 patrons of a company canteen in Copenhagen, Denmark
