WHAT IS HEARING DAMAGE?

  • Caused by too much or prolonged exposure to loud noise and sound.
  • Called NIHL
  • Noise Induced Hearing Loss
  • Common causes are known as impulse sounds

SENSITIVE STRUCTURES IN OUR INNER EAR CAN BE DAMAGED

SOUND

  • Sound is measured in decibels.
  • 75 decibels and under are not likely to cause hearing loss.
  • Anything above 75 even for a short amount of time can be dangerous.

85-100 DECIBELS

  • Garbage truck
  • Power mower
  • Motorcycle
  • Snowmobile
  • Jackhammer

110-140 DECIBELS

  • Very dangerous:
  • Rock concert
  • Jet engine
  • Firecracker
  • Nail gun, chainsaw, speakers at full volume

HOW MANY PEOPLE UNDER 18 SUFFER FROM HEARING DAMAGE?

  • 28 million Americans have hearing damage.
  • Three years or older: 13.2 million-1971
  • 24.2 million-1993
  • Has greatly increased-
  • 28.6 million Americans had a hearing disorder in 2000

CONTINUED

  • Approximately 17 in 1,000 children under age 18 are troubled with hearing loss
  • Increases with age:
  • 314 in 1,000 people over age 65
  • 40 to 50 percent of people 75 and older
  • I personally have hearing damage from playing drums without headphones.
