TYPES OF HEARING LOSS

  • Categorized by the part of the auditory system that is damaged
  • Three basic types
  • Conductive hearing loss
  • Sensorineural hearing loss
  • Mixed hearing loss

CAUSES OF HEARING LOSS

  • Hearing loss at birth (Called Congenital hearing loss)
  • Hearing loss after birth (Called Acquired hearing loss)
  • Ear infections
  • Noise
  • toxic Medications (Symptoms of medications)

HEARING LOSS IN CHILDREN

  • Children who have hearing problems have trouble understanding:
  • Vocabulary, Grammar, Word Order, Idiomatic expressions (etc.)
  • 8% of people with hearing problems are under 18

HEARING LOSS IN ADULTS

  • Hearing losses adults greatly handicaps:
  • Education, Employment,the well being of Americans (etc.)
  • Over the past thirty years the number of people with hearing loss has doubled
  • Noise exposure has long been known to be a risk factor for loss of hearing
  • More than 30 million Americans are exposed to hazardous sounds levels on a regular basis
