This project sought to address the negative perceptions that Lewisham BME patients have reported of the care they receive for long-term conditions. The proposal was to target specific disease areas and work with service providers, patient representation groups, and patients themselves, to understand the barriers to patients receiving (or perceiving that they have received) first class care.
A senior academic from Sheffield Hallam attended three subspecialty focus group events that were held over three separate days over the summer of 2017. The approach was standard across all three sub-specialties; breast cancer, prostate cancer and diabetes. The intention was that the academic would attend a patient focus group in the morning followed by a staff focus group in the afternoon. On the day no participants attended for the breast and prostate cancer focus groups but the staff events went ahead as planned.
The staff focus groups were audio recorded by the Sheffield Hallam staff and these were transcribed verbatim and anonymised for analysis. Each focus group was analysed by the academic that attended the focus group using framework analysis. The Sheffield Hallam team met after the initial data analysis to consider common themes that ran across all three staff focus groups this facilitated the development of an initial educational framework.

Two patient focus groups were held later facilitated and recorded by Lewisham healthcare staff. These focus groups were included members of the Lewisham BME community across both genders
These two focus groups were recorded and the audio recordings were transcribed verbatim and analysed using framework analysis in the same way as the staff focus groups. The Sheffield Hallam team met again to review the key themes from the patient and public data analysis, identifying commonalities between the themes across the focus groups and across the staff focus group themes.
A draft analysis of the early themes and educational framework were circulated to the Lewisham staff group in order to provide a member-check that the themes reflected the conversations that occurred across the three staff focus groups; this process was repeated for the public/patient analysis.
