PRESENTATION OUTLINE

HELIUM

BY AARON MARLATT

HISTORY OF HELIUM

  • Helium was discovered in 1868 by French Astronomer Pierre Janssen
  • Was named Helium after the Greek God of the sun, Helios
  • Was first thought to only exist in the sun
  • Was discovered on Earth when Uranium minerals were treated with acids
  • Was first observed in a solar eclipse when yellow spectral emission lines were seen

PROPERTIES OF HELIUM

  • Helium is a noble gas, which means it has a full outer shell of electrons
  • It is virtually unreactive
  • Nontoxic, colorless, odorless gas that is less soluble in water than certain gas
  • Condensation temperature is least of any known substances
  • Has high thermal conductivity allowing for use in lighting.

USES OF HELIUM

  • Used in balloons, weather to party balloons.
  • Used in some "neon" lights.
  • Used in extremely low temperature to achieve superconductivity state
  • Used for helium-oxygen mixtures for divers
  • Used as a shielding gas in welding

SOURCES

  • Found in the atmosphere as other elements radioactively decay.
  • Found in the pure form and used in the pure form
  • In the pure form, helium costs $5.20 per 100g
  • Is so unreactive, it is used to stabilize rocket fuel
  • Found all around the world.
