PRESENTATION OUTLINE

LEFT AND RIGHT BRAIN HEMISPHERES

BY IZZY ENRIQUEZ

Will people, specifically teenagers, be more inclined toward left brain or right brain thinking? The left brain is supposedly the logical, analytical side while the right side is known for creativity.

LEFT BRAIN

  • the left brain that can conduct “direct fact retrieval” and exact calculations (Dehaene 1999).
  • The left side also processes information in an analytical and focused manner.

RIGHT BRAIN

  • dominant in it’s visuospatial functions
  • needed more for “mapping or navigation, art, and construction” than its left counterpart (Boundless 2014).

PROCEDURE

  • Research the left and right brain hemispheres. The research paper is the result of this step.
  • Develop a hypothesis
  • Create a quiz to determine a person’s preference of right/left brain thinking. It will be an online quiz on an Ipad/laptop.
  • Determine the percentage of people that were more left brained, right brained, or in the middle.

DATA RESULTS

Every participant was given a quiz to fill out. Before the test began each participant was asked if they were more creative, or more analytical. They were also asked if they were proficient in music, mathematical computation, and languages. Their answers were taken into consideration during the process. The quiz was designed to test whether a person utilized their right or left side of the brain more. Each question was multiple choice (A, B, or C) so the participants could choose the answer that most closely resembled their habits, personality, and choices.

People who chose mainly A answers, identified themselves as more analytical, and are proficient in mathematics utilize their left brain more. Those who chose mainly B’s were in the 50/50 category. Those who thought of themselves as more creative and answered with mainly C’s were more right brain oriented. Three out of nine teenagers tested were right brain thinkers, one was 50/50, and 5 were left brain thinkers. The hypothesis was proven correct because the people are almost, or at, adulthood. Former studies have proven that as a person gets older, their capacity for divergent, creative thinking becomes less developed than when they were children. Thus, this group of people will most likely prefer a more analytical way of thinking.
