HEMOPHILIA

A RARE BLEEDING DISORDER WHERE BLOOD DOESN'T CLOT NORMALLY

CAUSE

  • Genetic
  • May be acquired (antibodies attack clotting factors)
  • Mainly male (disease only found in X chromosomes)
  • 1 in 5000 males with disorder
  • Can damage organs and tissues

SYMPTOMS

  • Internal bleeding in joints without serious injury
  • Bleeding in brain

BLEEDING IN JOINT SYMPTOMS

  • Tightness in joint without visual signs
  • Swollen
  • Hot
  • Painful to bend

BLEEDING IN BRAIN SYMPTOMS

  • Long lasting headaches
  • Repeated vomiting
  • Clumsiness of limbs
  • Sleepiness and changes in behavior
  • Seizures

SEVERITY

  • Mild: 5-40% normal clotting factor
  • Moderate: 1-5%
  • Severe: less than 1%

TREATMENT

  • Replacement therapy
  • Concentrates of VIII or IX dripped into vein
  • Made from human blood or recombinant
  • Treated on regular basis or when bleeding occurs

PROBLEMS WITH TREATMENT

  • Develops antibodies that attack clotting factors
  • Develops viral infections
  • Damages joints or muscles
