WHAT IS HEMOPHILIA?

  • A disease that results from the lack of clotting factors in the blood
  • Discovered in 1803 by Dr. John Conrad Otto
  • Three different types

TYPE A

  • Hereditary (Recessive Sex-Linked Disease on the X chromosome)
  • Results from a lack of factor VIII

TYPE B

  • Hereditary (Recessive Sex-Linked Disease on the X Chromosome)
  • Results from a lack of factor IX

TYPE C

  • Hereditary (Autosomal Inheitance)
  • Results from a lack of factor XI
  • Usually doesn't require treatment

TREATMENT

  • Managed by regular infusions of the deficient clotting factor
  • Can be treated with gene therapy
  • Treatment is either prophylactic or on-demand
  • Prophylaxis involves the infusion of clotting factor on a regular schedule
  • On-demand involves treating bleeding episodes once they arise

WELLNESS PLAN

  • Cannot be prevented
  • Can live a nearly normal life
  • Seek medical help, and get treatment as needed
