PRESENTATION OUTLINE

“Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity! I say, let your affairs be as two or three, and not a hundred or a thousand; instead of a million count half a dozen, and keep your accounts on your thumbnail”.

Thoreau went to live out in nature to find how to best live life with only what is essential. Our lives are cluttered with unnecessary materials. We should live only with the minimum to be able to clearly see all that life is.

“What sort of space is that which separates a man from
his fellows and makes him solitary? I have found that no exertion of the legs
can bring two minds much nearer to one another. . . .”

Thoreau expresses that we are not alone in the world even in solitude. That no amount of space should make us feel we are alone or lonely. That all beings are connected.

“there a perennial waveless serenity reigns as in the amber twilight sky, corresponding to the cool and even temperament of the inhabitants. Heaven is under our feet as well as over our heads”.

All things in life are connected. Thoreau expresses the transcendental belief that all beings and nature are connected through the Over-Soul or God. In nature we can feel the connection to all beings in life.

“The change from storm and winter to serene and mild weather, from dark
and sluggish hours to bright and elastic ones, is a memorable crisis which all things proclaim.”

In life we experience both light and dark, good and bad. That one never lasts forever. Life is all about balanced and in nature we can see how that pertains with changing seasons. In life the ends are the start of a new beginnings.

“In proportion as he simplifies his life, the laws of the universe will appear less complex, and solitude will not be solitude, nor poverty poverty, nor weakness weakness. If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be”

In conclusion, whether we should live our best lives. Whatever place we have in life we should enjoy it. After living with only the essential needs, we are able to understand the complexity of life. That life is what we make it to be.
