HENRY DAVID THOREAU

BIOGRAPHICAL INFO

  • Born: july 12, 1817 Died: May 6, 1862
  • Abolitionist who supported civil disobedience.
  • Spent a night in jail because he refused to pay a tax because he felt it supported slavery
  • Gave a lecture, " Resistance to Civil Government" 1847; printed 1849.
  • Active in the movement of anti-slavery.

CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE

  • the right of individuals to refuse to obey laws that they feel are unjust
  • His idea of non-violent civil disobedience influenced leaders such as Ghandi and MLK Jr.
  • "Any man more right than his neighbors consitutes a majority of one."

CONNECTION

  • William Lloyd Garrison
  • Both influential in abolishing slavery
  • Both spread their ideals through works of writing
