HENRY HIGHLANDGARNET

FROM THE BEGINNING

  • Henry highland was born December 23 1815
  • He had two parents and a sister
  • He was born a slave and later he and his family escaped when he was 9 years old

  • Him and his family escaped to New York where Henry attended a African free school
  • In school he studied science and English along with many other things

LEGACY

  • His most famous Speech is "call to rebellion" in 1843
  • He became a minister and served as the first pastor of liberty street negro Presbyterian church ,Troy New York in 1842

ACHIEVEMENTS

  • In 1842 Abraham Lincoln decided to let Henry be a speaker and that made Henry the first black speaker to address congress

HENRY NOW HAS A PARK AND A SCHOOL NAMED AFTER HIM

HIS FAMILY

  • When Henry and his family escaped they moved to New York
  • After a couple of years he discovered that his family had been pursued by slave hunters his parents were not captured but unfortunately his sister was

  • Henry died on February 13, 1882
  • Thankfully his speech "call to the rebellion" inspired other abolitionist to take movement like John brown
