Born April 27, 1820 in Derby, England
Oldest of nine children and the only child to survive infancy
From an early age, Herbert was strongly influenced by individualism
He showed resistance to authority as well as independence.
Spencer was trained to be a railroad engineer

Early 20's he turned to journalism and political writing.
He defended a number of causes such as land nationalism
Also how women are treated

EDUCATION
Spencer's father, William George Specncer was a school teacher
His parents dissenting religious convictions inspirehim a non-conformity
Learning was a sensory experience, he learn to interact w/ environment
Spencer stressed the importance of the sciences in schools
He became a school teacherin 1837

NOTABLE ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Developing/applying evolutionary theory to philophy, pyschology, & sociology
Helped develop the fundamentalist perspective
His political thoughts& his defense of natural rights and criticism
He was nominated for a Nobel Prize for Literature in 1902
Spencer wrote his 1st book in 1851 and his 2nd book in 1855

CONTRIBUTIONS TO SOCIOLOGY
He identified society with a biological organism
He proceeded to defend it against all objectives with great logical force
Created a synthetic philosophy that attempted to explain the universe
Best known for "survival of the fittest"
Possible to discover laws of morality that had the same authority as laws of nature
