Hermes was known famously as the messenger for all of the gods. He was related to a trickster and a friend to thieves. He wore a winged hat and shoes and carried a wand.
When Hermes was a baby, he was said to have "jumped out" of his crib and steal Apollo's cattle then he went back and played innocent. Apollo accused him of this act to Hermes's father, Zeus. He did not punish the kid. As an apology present, Hermes gave Apollo a lyre.
