Heroin is a powerful narcotic drug that is very habit-forming. It is derived from the opium poppy plant.

SHORT TERM EFFECTS

  • “Rush”: warm feeling of the skin and a dry mouth
  • Slowed breathing
  • Clouded mental functioning

  • Nausea with vomiting
  • Sedation; drowsiness
  • Hypothermia (body temp lower than normal)

LONG TERM EFFECTS

  • Damaged veins
  • Bacterial infections that damage blood vessels and the heart
  • Kidney and liver disease
  • Pneumonia
  • Tuberculosis

HAZARDS

  • Heart and liver failure
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Depression
  • Great risk for accidental overdose

Legal Aspects:
Known to be effective in malignant pain, and are a mainstay in the palliative care or cancer patients.

Legal Aspects Cont:
If a person is caught using, selling, or manufacturing heroin they will be arrested.
Possession: 7 years in jail/$15,000 fine.
Dealer & intent to sell: 5 years-life in jail/$25,000 fine.
If you are stoned in a public place you can spend 6 months in jail or a $1,000 fine.

History:
Opium addiction was a major problem in the 1850's. Then, heroin was first manufactured in 1898 by the Bayer pharmaceutical company of Germany and marketed as a treatment for tuberculosis as well as a remedy for morphine addiction.
