I am Ryan Athukorale, and I am Justin Smith, and we did our presentation on Herpes Simplex Virus.

What are Herpes?

  • Also known as HSV
  • Sores found on lips and genitals
  • Classified as an STD and Virus
First off, what are Herpes? Herpes, or HSV for short, are contagious sores that can be found on the lips and/or genitals of an infected person. Herpes can be transmitted sexually or as a virus. Herpes start when it is transmitted from another person, where it becomes dormant. When herpes becomes active again, it travels through the nerve paths back to the surface of the skin.

Modes of Contraction

  • STD
  • Intercourse at young age
  • Contact (kissing, intercourse, hot tubs, public toilet seats)
Herpes is transmitted between people through contact, usually sexually. Herpes can transmit to other people when they come into contact mostly, such as kissing, intercourse, hot tubs, and public toilet seats. Also having intercourse at a young age makes allows a bigger chance of herpes being able to start in your body.

Symptoms

Fever blisters and Cold sores
Herpes do not have any effect on your health. In fact, most people have herpes and do not know, or never will know that they have herpes. Symptoms of herpes include fever blisters and cold sores, which can be found on the outer lips, or on the genitals.

Diagnosis

  • Blood tests
  • Observations
Diagnostics for herpes are fairly simple. Observing cold sores or fiver blisters on your lips and/ or genitals usually indicate herpes. If you want to take the extra step to make sure that it is herpes, doctors office and heath facilities offer blood tests to look for signs of herpes.

New Cases

  • 24 million cases
  • 1/4 girls
  • 1/5 boys
Around the world, there are 24 million new cases of herpes each year. In the world, roughly 1 out of 4 girls have new cases of herpes each year, while 1 out of 5 boys have new cases of herpes.

Type I and II

  • Type one found on outer lips
  • Type two found on the genitals
Type one herpes are found on the outer lips. Cold sores can grow from lip tissue, which is an indication of type one herpes. Type two herpes are found on the genitals. Fever blisters can be found on the applicable area to indicate type two herpes.

Treatment

  • Prescribed medication
  • Helps stop spreading and transmitting
As of right now, there is no cure to entirely get rid of herpes. However, medication can be prescribed by a doctor. The medicine will help stop the spreading and transmission of herpes.

Prevention

  • Using condom during intercourse
  • Ask partner if they have STD
  • Limit partners
Preventing herpes is simple and can be easily avoided. Using a condom during intercourse is 99% effective. Ask your partner if they have ever or do have any STDs. Also limiting your number of partners will also decrease your chances greatly.
