BASIC INFORMATION

  • Watershed: The land that water flows across or under on its way to a stream, river, or lake
  • Major watershed: Ohio Watershed

BASIC INFORMATION (CON.)

  • Characterized by Wabash bottom lands along the lower Wabash and Ohio river
  • Low, nearly level flood plains, terraces, and bayous are composed of out wash deposits
  • Hardwood forests dominate in the woodland that remains
  • Soils are very poorly drained to well drained, formed in loamy and silty sediments
  • Primary waterbody is Pigeon Creek

  • Pigeon Creek originates in Gibson County and travels through Warrick and Vanderburgh counties, eventually discharging in the Ohio River
  • Flooding occurs annually along side the Ohio River in bottomlands

  • Acid Rain from industry, transportation,etc
  • Sanitary waste from residential areas is discharged into local areas
  • Runoff from parking lots (car oil, gasoline,etc)
  • Pollutants from human activities
  • Laundry and related household cleaners add phosphates
  • Construction

  • Example of laws: The Watershed Protection and Flood Protection Act in 1954
  • Watersheds are important because the surface water features and storm water runoff within a watershed ultimately drain to other bodies of water.
  • Ways to protect watersheds: participate in clean up, join watershed protection teams, monitor watersheds, restore projects
