What is Decolonization?

  • Following WWII, many European countries could no longer afford to maintain their empires.
  • Decolonization was the process in which former colonies gained independence

How did decolonization begin in India?

  • Despite promising more independence, in exchange for their service in WWI, the British continued to limit the political/economic rights of the Indian Population
  • This led to the formation of different political groups to fight for independence

Early 1900's groups

  • Indian Congress Party 1885 --> formed by the educated Hindu majority (65%) with the goal of creating a democratic India
  • Muslim League 1906 : Hoped to create a separate Muslim country where the Muslim minority (35%) could have political power

Gandhi's Protest to Independence

  • As the new leader (1920) of the Congress Party Gandhi hoped for united (Hindu/Muslim) Democratic India
  • He hoped to achieve this through non-violent protest such as the Salt March (Gandhi and followers marched 240 miles to the coast to make salt from seawater to protest the British tax on Salt)

The end of colonial rule 1947

  • After WWII, with little money to pay for its military to quell protest, the British granted independence
  • Although they were granted independence, tensioned remained between Muslims and Hindu---> Led to the creation of Pakistan (Muslim) and India (Hindu)
