PRESENTATION OUTLINE

KALI

GODDESS OF TIME, DEATH AND CHANGE

APPEARANCE

Kali is often shown with blood dripping from her mouth, wearing the severed heads of men decorating her neck and belt of arms. She has large eyes and is usually seen with her tongue sticking out. Each of her four arms seem to be doing something: she holds a sword in her upper left hand, her lower left holds a severed head of a demon, her right upper arm is held in a gesture of fearlessness and lastly her lower right gives reward to those who honour her.
Her mount is a lion and her name means "the dark one" she is also know as the destroyer.

ORIGIN AND WORSHIP

It is sometimes said kali existed before light was created. She destroys ignorance, maintains world order and blesses and frees those who seek knowledge of the divine. Kali comes from the god of fire, Agni and is know as the black horrible tongue. Kali is also the lover of Shiva.
Worshiping kali must be approached with care as she is seen as a fearsome mother figure with energy to protect her children. When worshipped the place may be heavy with incense or smoke. Burning funeral pyres, ash, lots of scattered bones on the ground and many types of carrion eating creatures. Those who are her decimals gain success quickly
Temples dedicated to the goddess kali are Calcutta called dakshineswar.
Kali loves those who are brave and relentless

THE STORY OF DEATH

People were crying "there's not enough room!" Because plants and trees covered the forest floors and babies came but only grew bigger and bigger. People had not enough to eat because no one died. The second cry of "there's not enough room!" Awoke kali and she peered out her window to see the mess below. Kali's servant time dressed her in blood red robes and organised her chariot which she rode down to earth. She gave gifts of spiderwebs, dust, decay, mould, worms, rust, mushrooms, crumbling, rot, mildew, the smell of rich earth and ageing. The crops and plants grew and withered. Babies aged and died. Kali returned to her palace and fell asleep again.

Kali is a fearsome goddess with divine feminine power and strength. In modern times Kali would be an inspirational feminine icon and keep world order, trying to prevent war and protect. I hope this slide show has taught you more about Kali and maybe appreciate Hinduism more.
