Hinduism was originated in India.

Hinduism was created 4,000 years ago.

Hinduism is polytheistic, meaning they worship many gods. Hinduism is a religion or way of life. It is the 3rd largest religion in the world. Hindus believe in reincarnation. Hinduism has flourished in India ever since and has also been a major influence on parts of Southeast Asia. Unlike other religions, Hinduism is not based on the beliefs of a single great religious leader. Hindus believe the world is united by a single spirit, know as Brahman.

MAJOR HOLY DAYS

  • Holi is the Hindu festival of colors.
  • Maha Shivaratri celebrations honor Shiva, destroyer of the universe.
  • Makar Sankranti is celebrated on the January 13 and it is the first Hindu holiday on the western calendar.
  • Diwali is the festival of lights for Hindus and Sikhs
  • Ram Navami takes place in April and celebrates the birth of Lord Rama

HINDUISM TRADITIONS

  • Hindus pierce the ears of babies and put golden earrings in them.
  • They do not kill snakes on Mondays or on the festival day of Nagpanchami.
  • Hindus do not wear footwear inside homes, temples, and other holy places.
  • Castes systems, traditional Hindus divide themselves into social groups know as castes.
  • Hindus girls and women pierce their nose.

INTERESTING FACTS

  • The common language for Hindu is Sanskrit, the oldest language in the world.
  • The Vedas is the oldest religious texts in Hinduism. The word Veda means knowledge.
  • Most of the Hindus do not eat beef and/or pork.
  • Salvation is the biggest goal of a Hindu’s life.
  • Not like other religions, Hinduism doesn't have a founder.
