PRESENTATION OUTLINE

INTRODUCTION

  • It was located in northwest Asia from 3300 bc to 1300 bc
  • It was the largest Asian civilization, stretching from Afghanistan, Pakistan and India
  • It flourished along the Indus River

URBANIZATION

  • Cities had brick houses, drainage systems, water supply and metallurgy industry
  • The cities of Mohenjo-daro and Harappa contained between 30000 and 60000 individuals
  • It is also called Harappa Civilization because of the first sites that was excavated
  • The city of Mohenjo-dark is considered a World Heritage Site

LANGUAGE

  • Indus Valley civilization had a writing system which today remains a mystery
  • Examples of this writing system have been found in pottery, amulets, seals and tablets

DECLINE AND END

  • Main cities were gradually abandoned
  • The main cause was probably the drying of the Sarawasti river
  • Over the course of several centuries, the Aryans settled down in those cities and took up agriculture
