  • The atomic bombings on Japan were conducted by the United States
  • People living in Hiroshima and Nagasaki were effected
  • The driver of the plane that dropped the bomb was Colonel Paul W. Tibbets, Jr.

WHAT

  • The atomic bombings of the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan were conducted by the United States 
  • during the final stages of World War II in August 1945
  • The two bombings were the first and remain the only use of nuclear weapons in wartime.

  • Tinian is North Pacific island in the Marianas
  • It is 1,500 miles south of Japan.

Effects

  • Hiroshima's population has been estimated at 350,000
  • it was the equivalent to 20000 tons of TNT
  •  approximately 70,000 died immediately from the explosion
  •  another 70,000 died from radiation within five years.
  • the explosion flattened the city

  • The bomb was called 'Little Boy'
  • Dropped by the Boeing B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay
  •  The Little Boy was a development of the unsuccessful Thin Man nuclear bomb
  • Little Boy was the codename

Strange facts

  • The US Airforce before dropping the A-bomb, dropped pamphlets in Hiroshima warning people of the bombing
  • For decades, the mayor of Hiroshima wrote letters of protest , as a plea to end the use of nuclear weapons. 
  • The oleander was the first thing to bloom again after the explosion of the atomic bomb.
  • The oleander is the official flower of the city of Hiroshima
