A tailor's widow raising three young children on her own.
A very resourceful person and cares very much about her surroundings.
She and her children survived the initial blast and were unharmed.
They then suffered radiation mutations and sickness for years.

A Methodist pastor with a wife and baby son
Educated in the US, speaks English very well
Shuttled people across the river and gave dying people water
Didn't stop helping until struck with radiation sickness
Only one still living at end of book

The owner of a private hospital in the city
His clinic was washed away when the bomb went off
Like most of the other doctors he was too hurt to aid others
Was not affected by radiation
He died a fews year later of a mystery illness

He falls sick with radiation poisoning and becomes tired and weak
He becomes a Japanese citizen
Changes his name to Father Makoto Takakura.

Selflessness is shown when he treats sick patients without a permit.
Makes important contributions to treatment of radiation sickness.
He also doesn't seek rewards for his hard work.

20 year old lady who works at a tin factory
Was in arranged mariage to soldier
Bookshelf fell on her leg and crippled for life
Becomes a faithful Christian and joins a French Nunary
