PART 2: CONFLICT

GENOCIDE: The Holocaust

  • The holocaust was one of the largest genocides in the history of mankind.
  • From 1933 to 1945, 6 million Jews were slaughtered by the Nazis.
  • Almost 2/3 of the Jews in Europe were eliminated.

Causes

  • This was caused by the horrible ideas of Hitler
  • He believed that the Jews were an inferior race, and that they should not live.
  • He got much of Germany to follow him in his beliefs.

Results

  • The result of this was the near-complete extermination of Jews in Europe.
  • Jewish people were forced to move out of the continent
  • Communities were destroyed, entire cities demolished by the Nazis.
  • It completely changed the political and physical features of Europe
  • It changed Judaism from a common religion to a scarcely practiced one.

Civil War: World War II

  • World War II was the bloodiest war in history.
  • More than 50 nations were involved in this war.
  • Over 20 million soldiers and 40 million civillians were killed
  • After 6 years, the allies eventually overtook the axis powers
  • They won the war and gave many people in prison camps freedom

CAUSES/Countries Involved

  • The main causes were the Holocaust and Hitler wanting to gain control of all of Europe.
  • Some of the countries on the Allies side were the USA, the Soviet Union, and China
  • some on the Axis side were Germany, Japan, Italy, and Hungary.

Results

  • This war greatly impacted the area.
  • There were 27 million people lost by the Soviet Union
  • All the Jews left in concentration camps were forced to leave the area
  • It changed the landcape; many cities were destroyed with bombs.

Conflicts over ideas: north and South Korea

  • North and South Korea are countries that share a border, but are different.
  • In the Korean War, North Korea invaded the South multiple times

Causes

  • South Korea has a right-wing government, and many freedoms.
  • North Korea has a dictatorship, and they have hardly any freedoms.

Results

  • The result of this was the division of Korea into two seperate counrtries.
  • Now, the countries are completely different.
  • The division has caused a change in peoples' beliefs in the region.
  • Some people in North Korea believe in the government that they have
  • most people in the south do not think it is right

Results

  • The cultures have split.
  • In South Korea, they are advancing and modernizing their way of life
  • in North Korea, they are not advancing at all.

Oklahoma City bombing

  • One of the worst acts of terrorism in American history.
  • The Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City was destroyed by a truck bomb
  • Killed 168 people and injured more that 680 others
  • Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols were the two people convicted of this bombing

Results

  • This event and the 9/11 attack changed the way that we travel
  • And it changed the amount of security in a given area.
  • Now, there are many restrictions on things that you can travel with
  • There is now much more security on important or large buildings.
  • The bombing also changed the physical landscape
