THE SOLAR SYSTEM

  • Includes the sun and all bodies that orbit the sun
  • Current model: The Heliocentric Model (sun-centered)
  • Earlier Models: The Geocentric Model (earth-centered)

ARISTOTLE

  • A Greek philosopher
  • Thought earth was the center of all things
  • He thought that if the earth went around the sun, the relative positions would change earth moves
  • This is called parallax

ARISTARCHUS

  • Greek astronomer and mathematician
  • Reported to have proposed a heliocentric model
  • His model was not widely accepted at the time

PTOLEMY

  • Astronomer, geographer, and mathematician
  • Lived in Egypt
  • His book, Almagest, one of the earliest books we still have
  • Developed a detailed geocentric model

COPERNICUS

  • Polish astronomer
  • Felt Ptolemy's model was too complicated
  • Developed the first detailed heliocentric model

KEPLER

  • German mathematician and astronomer
  • Formulated three principals, which today are known as Kepler's laws
