ACIENT GREECE

  • PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY SHAPED THE DEVELOPMENT OF ACIENT GREECE
  • Mountains and seas isolated the country keeping them independent
  • One of the most powerful cities of Ancient Greece was Athens
  • The first democracy was introduced by Athens
  • By 130 b.c. The Roman Empire conquered most of Greece

THE ROMAN EMPIRE

  • Rome became a dominant power on the Italian pinensuala
  • The Roman Empire was a republlic Where people chose they're leaders
  • Roman law led to standards of justice still used today
  • About 200 bc roman armies started to seize territory
  • The first roman emperor was Augustus

CHRISTIANITY

  • Jesus of Nazareth preached a message of love and forgiveness
  • He attracted many followers and enemies
  • Roman authorities had Jesus executed
  • But within days his followers reported he had risen from the dead
  • Christian leaders peter and Paul established a Christian church in Rome

ROME'S DECLICINE

  • In ad 476 Germanic leaders overthrew the last Rome emperor
  • Rome had great influence on the west and Europe
  • It spread classical culture and Christianity as we'll and legal systems in many countries
  • They also influenced many architectural styles

THE MIDDLE AGES

  • A Germanic king named Charlemagne united most do Western Europe
  • No strong government s could withstand the invaders
  • Most Western European where poor

CHRISTIAN EUROPE

  • The Byzantine empire passed on the Eastern Orthodoxy
  • And Greek and roman culture to slavic groups
  • The Roman Catholic Church in Rome was headed by a powerful pope

THE CURSADES

  • The Christian faith united Europeans
  • Western Europe gathered volunteers to make large armies to claim the holy land back
  • The bubonic plague spread rapidly and killed a third of Europeans population

THE RENISSANCE

  • People started taking interest in art and learning
  • Humanism said that faith was a path to knowledge

  • Martian Luther sets out to reform churches
  • Portuguese navigators make new trade routes to get spices faster

THE ENLIGHTENMENT

  • Europeans turn to science for ways to explain
  • Ideas spark a revolution

  • Many people left to find work in cities
