THE PLANNING OF THE ATTACK

  • After Lincoln's reelection
  • November 1864 Booth plammed to kidnap the president
  • Booth wanted to hold lincoln for ransom
  • For letting a few of the confederate prisoners go
  • Booth spent more than $10,000

BOOTHES MOTIVATION

  • April 11th the president gave a speech to a small group
  • His speech outlined some of his ideas about reconstructing the nation
  • Booth was in that small group and a big confederate supporter
  • The presidents speech, made booth more angry then he already was
  • Boothe said "now by god, ill put him through.

ABOUT JOHN BOOTHE

  • Born in Maryland in 1838
  • He was a respected actor
  • Boothe took a break form acting
  • Boothe got involved in the conspiracy
  • of kidnapping the president

THE DAY OF THE ATTACK

  • John and his partners planned
  • To kill three other government officials
  • The group, thought it would throw the north into chaos
  • But it didn't go as planned
  • Only one person died that day

Failed attempts

Boothe's partners didn't follow through on the plan one got into the governors house and stabbed him, but none of the stabs where fatal

Another conspirator, made his way to the hotel, but decided to detour to the saloon, got intoxicated and lost his nerve

Lincoln's assassination

  • Boothe got up to the presidents booth
  • Using his credibility from acting
  • Boothe used a .44 caliber derringer pistol
  • Timed so that the audiences laughter would mask the shot
  • He fored a single shot into lincolns head at point blank range

ESCAPING

  • Boothe, jumped onto the stage and ran escaping into the night
  • Boothes jump, had injured his leg
  • Boothe, went to one of his partners houses Dr.Samuel Mudd
  • Boothe and one of his partners where apprehended in a tobacco barn
  • In virgina, then Herold gave himself up, but boothe would not and ended up getting shot

ESCAPING

  • He was killed by corporal Boston corbett

BURIAL

  • Abraham Lincoln's body is finally buried
  • At Springfield's Oakridge cemetery

CONSEQUENCES

  • Mrs.Mary Surrat, and other co conspirators where sentenced to hang
  • On July 7th, 1865
  • All four of them where hung at the same time
